Chris Babits

Chris is an Andrew W. Mellon Engaged Scholar Initiative Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned his Ph.D. in History from UT-Austin in May 2019. His work examines the intersections of religion, medicine, gender, and sexuality in the modern United States. Chris’ book project, To Cure a Sinful Nation: A History of Conversion Therapy in the United States, examines 140 years of gender identity and sexual orientation change efforts. Chris earned his BA and MA in History from Clark University, located in lovely Worcester, Massachusetts. He has worked as a boarding school teacher, academic advisor, museum educator, professional researcher, and student teaching coordinator. Chris was enrolled in another doctoral program, completing the coursework and exams for an Ed.D. in Social Studies Education at Teachers College, Columbia University. He ultimately realized that his purpose was in researching and writing about the complexities of the past.
